Listening is different from hearing. Hearing is simply a mechanical function of the parts of the ear sending signals to the brain.
Listening is connecting to the person and their thoughts; it is "Present Moment Awareness" as John Butler says. Listening, in my opinion, has something to do with the soul.
It may be true that if you don't care about understanding the other person then you are not listening.
